Today, more and more homes are being built with garages either attached or as an out building. American homes will sometimes have two or three automobiles, so a proper garage is necessary. Depending on how the house and garage was built and how you utilize the space, proper garage door insulation may be necessary.
If your home was recently built, there is most likely proper and adequate insulation on the outer walls of the garage. The room itself and the door are usually not insulated, but outside walls and any walls between the garage and the inside of the house will be. If the space is only being used to park cars and store items, you will probably not need to add insulation. But if you use the space as a workshop or if it is finished, you may need to. Also, if the house is older it may not be properly insulated and the door itself may be a source of heat loss.
There are two routes you can take when it comes to the garage door. There are kits and there is the do it yourself option. Either way, it is wise to take your time and install the insulation securely.
If you decide to not use a kit, be certain that anything you install does not interfere with the functioning of the door. Most doors have several sections that need to bend at the hinges. If these are blocked, you may permanently damage the door. Also to be considered is the additional weight you will be putting on the door. Most electric openers are designed to work with a certain style and weight of door. If you exceed this, you may be in risk of damaging the mechanics.
An easy option is to use a kit. These come with all of the tools and pieces you need to properly insulate. You simply need to know what size of door you have to purchase the right kit. These usually install with clips or adhesives, so it is usually not necessary to drill into the door itself.
Before starting the project, it is a good idea to check with the manufacturer. If it is a newer house, there may still be markings and stickers on the door that indicate the manufacturer and model number. The company that made the door may have specially made insulation kits specifically designed for your door.
If you decide it is necessary to insulate your garage door, do some research before starting the project. Take your time when installing, and you will soon have a well insulated garage.
